Behind the Design: Changi Airport Terminal 2 Expansion

Introduction

Earlier this week, DSGN arcHive published an article titled, “Why Changi Airport Terminal 2 Expansion is the Ultimate Traveler’s Dream”, in which they spoke to our Head of Business/Executive Director Law Yoke Foong about accessible airport design in Changi Airport T2 Expansion.

With BOIFFILS Architecture, RSP contributed as architects and C&S engineers for the Changi Airport Terminal 2 Expansion project

“The expansion works have successfully transformed T2 into a more human-centric welcome for passengers. With functional spaces set amidst a lush landscape, the new terminal aims to provide a familiar environment that reflects Singapore’s identity as a City in a Garden. It is a personal wish that the passenger experience remains warm, intuitive, and positive for many years to come.”

Accessible Airport Design

As the project lead, Yoke emphasises the importance of designing for humanity. Rather than the size of expansion, the team prioritises the passenger experience by introducing beauty and accessibility into the space.

Here, the team reconfigured the area with wider lanes and automated lanes. The team also introduced Special Assistance Lanes (SAL) by ICA for travellers with reduced mobility and family groups.

Biophilic design features are also utilised to create user-friendly spaces. For example, passengers young and old can enjoy the see-through aquatic pond in the revamped garden. Additionally, seating areas of different heights and armrests are placed within lush garden-like spaces.

As such, the terminal expansion has won countless awards recognising its exceptionally accessible airport design.

Local and International Recognition

Recently, the project won the Singapore Good Design (SG Mark) award in the Architecture category, an award that sets the benchmark for exceptional design. The project also clinched the BCA Universal Design Excellence Award, which celebrates innovations in user-friendly design in 2023.

Internationally, Changi Airport Terminal 2 Expansion is the Popular Choice Winner of the Architizer A+ Awards in the Transport Interiors category and is a finalist at the World Architecture Festival for the Transport category.
