RSP and Squire Mech (SM) are proud to be part of the CDL EcoTrain Launch, held at City Square Mall on 10 March 2025. The event was graced by the President of the Republic of Singapore, Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Group Chief Executive Officer of CDL, Mr. Sherman Kwek.
The CDL EcoTrain is the nation’s first decommissioned Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) train cabin repurposed into a sustainability education hub. Designed to engage and inspire the public, it will officially open on 15 March 2025, offering an interactive space for learning about green initiatives and environmental stewardship.
"The CDL EcoTrain showcases how we can creatively repurpose existing structures to serve new, meaningful purposes. By transforming a retired train cabin into the EcoTrain, we’re proud to support CDL’s effort to help young people understand the importance of sustainability and become responsible stewards of the planet. This project is a step toward that goal, and we’re thrilled to have contributed to its transformation into a more sustainable future."
Sonny Chionh, Executive Director, RSP
As key consultants for both the CDL EcoTrain and City Square Mall’s Asset Enhancement Initiative (AEI), RSP and SM played a crucial role in leading the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP), Structural, and Qualified Person (QP) aspects of the project. Representing RSP at the launch were Executive Director Sonny Chionh, Senior Associate Charlie, and Senior Architect Karen Ho, alongside SM’s Director, Evan Satya Budisarwono.
The event began with an engaging mini quiz before the arrival of the President, followed by a charming sustainability-themed skit of Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax, performed by young children. Mr. Sherman Kwek welcomed the registered guests with an opening speech, before officially launching the CDL EcoTrain with the President. Guests were then invited to witness a symbolic tree planting ceremony in front of the EcoTrain, followed by an exclusive tour of the EcoTrain, offering a firsthand look at its educational features.
Sustainable design is ultimately about people. Creating spaces that inspire, educate, and uplift communities. By transforming a retired train cabin into a hub for environmental learning, we’re not just repurposing materials but creating a deeper connection between people and the environment. We’re excited to continue advancing sustainability alongside CDL and its key partners, building on the vision of Singapore’s first eco-mall and now, the EcoTrain.
