BAPS Hindu Mandir: THE Middle East's first Hindu temple oasis
The BAPS Hindu Mandir showcases architectural innovation and cultural harmony amid the UAE’s contrasting desert landscape. Moreover, this one-of-a-kind temple complex unites cultures, as the first official temple in the Middle East. While three thousand skilled masons in India crafted the temple, RSP was commissioned to design the surrounding complex. Our goal was to honour their craftsmanship by creating a design that frames and enhances the temple’s presence. The complex provides the Hindu Community with communal spaces and courtyards, an amphitheater, in addition to monk’s accommodations.

A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY
Almost immediately after being appointed, our team embarked on a spiritual journey. They visited temples and monasteries around the world to immerse themselves in the faith and its architectural heritage.
Their first stop was Delhi, where they studied the largest central complex and began learning about the history and culture of the Swamis. From there, they travelled to Gujarat, spending three days with monks and gaining insight into sacred practices. It was in Gujarat that they drew inspiration from ancient stepwells, weaving the symbolism of water and life into their design.
The journey ended in London, where they explored European interpretations of temple architecture and how traditional forms could blend with modern design approaches.
ARCHITECTURAL OASIS: A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY
The BAPS Hindu Mandir brings together Indian tradition and Middle Eastern context. While the temple honours Hindu craftsmanship, the surrounding complex responds to the desert landscape and regional culture.
We framed the temple with modern pavilions, drawing inspiration from Indian stepwells, structures that represent life and water. In the Middle East, where water is both scarce and sacred, this symbolism felt especially meaningful.
One key feature is the inclusion of three rivers that represent India’s sacred waterways. We also introduced a shaded walkway and an open-air amphitheater. During their travels, the team saw how cultural stories were reenacted in temple courtyards. The Swamis envisioned the complex as a place where people from around the world could come together to learn and celebrate their faith.
To deepen the sense of reflection, we added a private garden for spiritual teachings. This space remains closed to the public, preserving its quiet purpose.
The complex blends with the desert surroundings, both in tone and form. It reflects the essence of Hinduism while respecting its Middle Eastern setting. Designed in close collaboration with the Swamis, the space invites people from all over the world to gather, learn, and celebrate.

The BAPS Hindu Mandir is a first of its kind in the region, representing global harmony and cultural exchange. High visitor turnout and ongoing development plans demonstrate the project’s success.
A SPIRITUAL & COLLABORATIVE JOURNEY
For the team, the BAPS Hindu Mandir was far more than an architectural project, it became a spiritual journey. From the very beginning, our designers met weekly with the Swamis and the BAPS community, often starting with prayers that grounded the work in its spiritual meaning.
These moments of reflection helped the team connect with the project’s deeper purpose. The team’s diverse backgrounds also played a vital role, fostering the cultural synergy needed to bring such a meaningful space to life.
